The US Constitution was actually a pretty well designed document, and it owes a lot to one fundamental premise: humans cannot be trusted with unlimited power, and this goes double (or more than double) for humans with an active interest in seeking power.

Thus the principle of the separation of powers of born, with the intent being for the judiciary, legislature and executive to act as checks on each other, and the general population to act as checks on them all.
