Went and saw this on Saturday night with my wife.

Redmayne and Jones are both brilliant. Redmayne's portrayal is uncanny at times. In long shots you might almost be mistaken for thinking you were looking at archival footage.

This is very much an English film, with the understatement and slow pacing that suggests.

This is particularly clear if you compare it to something like A Beautiful Mind which felt a lot more "slick".

Both my wife and I left the cinema thinking "I get the feeling I'm supposed to be uplifted, but I'm not". Maybe that in itself is deliberate.

I'm in the process of reading Jane Hawking's book on which the film is based. A lot of chronology compression and some re-ordering in the film version.

I haven't seen the 2004 TV movie, but will be interesting to compare.
