Went and saw this on Saturday night with my wife. ---- Redmayne and Jones are both brilliant. Redmayne's portrayal is uncanny at times. In long shots you might almost be mistaken for thinking you were looking at archival footage. ---- This is very much an English film, with the understatement and slow pacing that suggests. This is particularly clear if you compare it to something like A Beautiful Mind which felt a lot more "slick". ---- Both my wife and I left the cinema thinking "I get the feeling I'm supposed to be uplifted, but I'm not". Maybe that in itself is deliberate. ---- I'm in the process of reading Jane Hawking's book on which the film is based. A lot of chronology compression and some re-ordering in the film version. ---- I haven't seen the 2004 TV movie, but will be interesting to compare.
