How do you know how good you are at something?

There seem to be two extremes:

  • Impostor syndrome (thinking you're terrible at it when actually you're OK or even good)
  • Dunning-Kruger syndrome (thinking you're great at it when you're terrible at it)

Obviously this is an over-simplification.

People in the latter category get a lot of hate, but I actually think it's a much better place to be. Confidence is key to success.

Proposed rules for self-calibration:

  1. Notice when you fail and try to understand why and how you could improve.
  2. Don't make excuses.
  3. "I am a terrible person" is not a valid root cause.
